iOS, the crApple kind not Cisco

Let me start off by saying I am not an advocate of piracy and my reason for the things mentioned in this post are about the freedom of choice.  OK, now that that is out of the way lets get into what I noticed with the first Apple product I have ever owned.  Being that this blog is destined to be more an exploration of my open source endeavors an Apple product goes against that in a lot of ways.  I purchased an Apple TV 2G “puck” this weekend.  I only had one goal in mind as I stood in Best Buy with my Android shirt on no less.  Jailbreak and free this little puck.

Now I have been looking into this for a few weeks because I don’t own a Mac, nor do I have iTunes installed on anything I own.  All of my research led me to a certain JailBreak app for windows but I still had to install iTunes so the drivers would load.  I will not mention the app used here you can go find that yourself.  I wanted to try XBMC and some of the other things that Nito offers to expand the functionality of the device.  Here is where things got interesting for me.  Gathering up and reading instructions I noticed something about most of the install instructions.  Apt-Get, maybe this is common knowledge for everyone else but it was news to me that iOS is Linux.  Maybe not I am still new to a lot of this so I might be somewhat confused.  Here is the Wikipedia article on iOS though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_(Apple).  I guess I somewhat knew about it because of OS X going Darwin back in the day.  I had some friends in college that were all over that one.  The Apple TV 2G is not a powerhouse but still a capable performer from what I saw of the specs.  After I got the thing JailBroken I loaded up XBMC and noticed this thing is slower than crap.  Not sure if I got a not so good JailBreak or its just the device/software.  I am going to restore and re-JailBreak it tonight to see if it gets better.  I love my Logitech Revue and so far it destroys this little puck in terms of performance and capabilities in every way.  I will be posting more I am sure about the Apple Tv 2G when I get everything set the way I like it but for now that’s all I have.

One thing I like about the Apple TV 2G that I have planned if it streams well after some tests it may be a nice travel companion with my 5-Spot.  I will also do some testing on the Netflix streams so I can watch the size of a file and figure out if I need to increase my data package.
